L’équipe VAriabilité à Long terme du Climat et de l’Océan (VALCO) a pour objectif de reconstruire les changements climatiques et environnementaux passés au-delà du registre instrumental, à des échelles mensuelles, séculaires, millénaires...

L’équipe VAriabilité à Long terme du Climat et de l’Océan (VALCO) a pour objectif de reconstruire les changements climatiques et environnementaux passés au-delà du registre instrumental, à des échelles mensuelles, séculaires, millénaires et jusqu’à plusieurs millions d’années, afin d’en comprendre les mécanismes et les impacts. Dans ce cadre scientifique large, l’équipe se concentre sur les thématiques et questions suivantes :

  • Les grands systèmes de circulation tropicale : mousson et les zones de convergence (ITCZ, SCAS, SCPS…);
  • El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO);
  • Le fonctionnement des upwellings de bord est;
  • Impact des changements climatiques sur les écosystèmes;
  • Évaluation modèles-données de la variabilité multi-échelle;
  • Validation et Calibration de nouveaux proxies paléo-climatique et paléo-environnementaux.

Les recherches de l’équipe sont focalisées sur des chantiers géographiques qui incluent l’Afrique, l’Amérique latine et les Caraïbes, l’océan Pacifique tropical et l’océan Indien. Les reconstructions se basent sur la mesure de proxies géochimiques, sédimentologiques ou biologiques, préservés dans des archives naturelles (sédiments marins, lacustres, spéléothèmes, coraux, foraminifères, coquilles etc) et indicateurs des changements climatiques, océanographiques, et plus largement environnementaux.
